6 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Chop Your Locks

Hi everyone! So today I decided to discuss a little bit about cutting your hair. And I don't mean your normal trim or a few inches off - I mean the big chop. I never loved my hair, so when the idea popped into my head to cut it into a bob I decided it was perfect. It was trendy, fun, and easier to take care of! What could possibly hold me back! As much as I do like my short hair (its a love/hate relationship) I feel like I wouldn't have gone through my period of regret if I would have given it all a little bit more consideration. And that is why I'm writing this post! I want you all to know what you're getting into beforehand, and I want you to consider the questions you didn't even know you had! So here are my top 6 questions that I think you should ask yourself before you go for the big cut.

1 || How do I usually style my hair? Will my cut make it harder to do that?
My tragic example of this was my go to double french braids. I literally wore french braids almost every day to avoid using heat on my hair. When I cut my hair short, my layers stuck out in crazy ways whenever I tried to put it up. It ended up working out - I just had to get a little bit creative about my everyday hair styles. If this happens/happened to you - Youtube is your best friend.

2 || How fast does my hair grow? Will I be okay if it takes awhile to get it back to the length it was before?
Some girls have the blessed ability to grow hair (basically) overnight. I am not one of those girls. With the right food and some biotin vitamins I definitely sped up the process, but if I would have known how long it would take I would have gotten less hair cut off. I'm all for a risky cut, but make sure your risk doesn't cost you 6 months of pictures.

3 || Do I want layers?
If you're used to your long hair, you're probably used to your long layers. Your short hair will show your layers a lot more and honestly change you look entirely. Be sure to ask a hair stylist and show them pictures of what you want so you know you're getting what you want.

4 || Am I looking at the right inspo pictures?
Okay here's the deal. If you are a platinum blonde looking at beautiful brunette bobs - well your cut may not look the same way. Make sure you're taking into consideration how much style went into that inspo pic (do you want to do all that curling on a daily basis?) and what the model looks like. Things to consider include hair color as mentioned previously, face shape, layering, angle taken, etc. Try your best to find something realistic as your inspo picture, instead of a done up photoshopped celeb.

5 || Why am I doing this anyway?
What the hell is my motive for cutting my hair...? Good motive example: I have been feeling overwhelmed by the length of my hair and feel like I need a fresh start with shorter locks. Bad motive example: A dare, a plot of revenge, or anything involving someone else's opinions or input, honestly. Do it for you honey!

6 || Will this change how I see myself?
Here's the thing - the answer to this question should always be no. If you are even thinking for a second that your hair could change who you are as a person you are in desperate need of an intervention. Hair is fun and exciting, but at the end of the day it isn't what matters. If this outer change is going to corrupt your insides don't do it - there are more important things to work on before changing any aspect of your hair. Be confident, be real, and be inspired by yourself. And then give the chop a try.

  1. I cut my hair short last year and I loved it at first, so I cut it even shorter and did not like it at all. I couldn't even get it up in a ponytail! And I always used to braid my hair too! Now I'm growing it back out and (luckily) it's growing pretty fast!

    1. I got mine cut too short at first so I can totally relate! I love the length now but I still sometimes miss my long hair - its definitely a toss up!

  2. Hehehe! I tend to regret cutting my hair short every time I have done it. I always tell myself I won't do it again, but then next time feels like a good choice, again. I've also done it in-spite before, never a good reason.

    1. I totally understand this! You never really know for sure if its a good decision until after its done - it can be a fun risk, though!
