I have been wanting to put together this post for such a long time! I've always been a huge fan of the smoothie bowl idea - I mean c'mon an insta-worthy meal has never been something I've been known to turn down. But, when I went away to college and experienced the lack of wholesome, organic food that was readily available, I went from huge fan to die hard. Not only is this a healthy meal, it's something you can have fun with, especially if you make it on your own. Me, my sister, and my best friend got together and each created our own design on top of our smoothie bowl - it was like our own little food art, and it was SO fun!
Now - there is a little bit of work that happened leading up to the fun decorating part.
And heres how it went:
First, we had to decide what we wanted our base to taste like. In every base I used a packet of Acai Puree from Trader Joes. I let them thaw out, put them in the blender, and threw some frozen fruit in (also from Trader Joes) and added a little bit of almond milk and vanilla yogurt if necessary. It was one of those things where I just kept blending until I liked the consistency.
Tip No. 1 - one packet of puree per person - you don't need more than that!
Base Ingredients I Used:
Tip No. 2 - You can make all sorts of different bases, I used a tropical fruit blend but I've heard of mango, dragon fruit, strawberry banana, and pretty much any type of smoothie you can get at your local smoothie shop!
Second, once it's all blended, pour it into your bowl of choice and smooth it out with a spoon.
Tip No. 3 - you can store your Acai bowl in the freezer for 20-30 minutes before you start topping if its a little bit runny!
Third, decorating! This part is definitely the most fun - so get creative with it!
In the picture at the top we all three did different designs - and they all turned out so fun. If you do a quick Pinterest search of Acai Bowls, even more inspo comes up.
Topping Ingredients I Used:
- Bananas
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Coconut Flakes
- Mini Chocolate Chips
- Walnuts
- Chia Seeds
- Kiwi
- Granola
- Honey
- Yogurt
- Peanut Butter (microwave before you drizzle)
